2. BIMA [British Interactive Media Association] Student of the Year Award

Note: Deadline extended until end of April

We’re looking for exciting student talent, who have demonstrated their potential through a strong digitally-led idea. The submitted work will demonstrate a clear response to a meaningful challenge, combined with bold creative digital thinking. The idea can be either realised or illustrated – as we’re judging the quality of the thinking not the final execution.

This category is for work (coursework or other) produced by fulltime students studying courses of relevance to the digital industry. Entries should set out the challenge/brief, the insight and proposed solution. Projects could include (but are not limited to) mobile app design, digital marketing innovation, social media campaign concepts etc.

Students should submit their idea as a casefilm and/or digital* presentation board, and a short written entry with the aforementioned headings. [ *Apologies, we cannot accept any entries via post. ]

Previous winners include:

> A smart monitoring app that encourages kids to use less energy by letting them pocket the surplus from a monthly usage target.

> A Facebook campaign that used the negative trend of Nek Nomination into an initiative for blood donation for young people.

The BIMA Awards are the longest standing and most prestigious digital awards in the UK. A BIMA Award is recognised across the industry as a superb symbol of the highest achievement in UK digital, and winning one will set you head and shoulders above the rest.

Critical Digital on Thursday 21st April with Ramon Amaro

RAFlyerI’m very excited to announce the fifth Critical Digital on Thursday 21st April at 1700 in M104 with a personal hero of mine, Ramon Amaro. He has a very dry bio which is below but he’s an incredibly sharp and fascinating data ethicist who can make complex systems like algorithms, databases and AI seem simple, explaining their origins and functions in a really great way. This is the most unmissable Critical Digital so far.

Ramon Amaro is Associate Lecturer in Critical Theory and Media Philosophy at the Centre for Cultural Studies, Digital Culture Unit, Goldsmiths University of London. His joint academic background in philosophy, sociology and engineering comes to fruition in his research looking at the philosophical dimensions of computer modelling of social processes, with particular reference to data fairness and algorithmic equality in machine learning and artificial intelligence systems.

Previous critical digitals are available here and as usual there’ll be beers after the talk,

Thanks and looking forward to seeing you there!
